Some of you may have noticed the improvement in performance of the site the last day or so. Well, officially last night I completed the migration of the website from our previous hosted server in San Jose, California to a new rackmount server in the same co-location facility.

Now, for the cool part, when I was in the process of upgrading I asked about our current bandwidth as we have maxed out our connection on a few occassions. I was informed we were capped at 1.5Mbps on our connection but had a pool of 400GB (gigabytes) of throughput per month. Well, the new server comes with a 1TB (terabyte) pool of bandwidth per month. I was able to get them to increase our pipe from 1.5Mbps to 10Mbps. So you should notice a significant increase in download performance from this new and improved server and connection.

I will be working in the next few weeks to transition all services from the old server to the new one so if you see any messages about the site not being able to be found you know what's going on.

Back to work!

Many of you that are faithful readers of our blog (Hi Mom!) have probably noticed a different look and feel to the site. Along with that you've probably noticed the addition of some ads on the right side of the screen and are wondering "why are there ads up here?". Well, the answer is ... I thought it would be cool and interesting to see if we actually make any money with the click-thrus.

It is actually more of a test to see the viability of pay-per-click ads on a personal blog and to see what sort of revenue may be generated from it. The ads are strictly controlled by Google but their service is supposed to try and find ads that match the content as closely as possible so you will begin to see the content change and hopefully be more relevant. Anyway, there's a baby on the way ... gotta pay for those diapers somehow, right?

Anyway, about time for me to get back to work. Just wanted to give you a brief explanation of the new design and give some additional information on the ads. Have a great day!

This past weekend Mark G, Mark C, Kyle N, and I spent some time cleaning up the Tech Room at our church. Now as most of you can imagine that something that I have anything to do with is going to involve some level of clutter, which would be true.

The room was, for all intents and purposes, trashed! We had stuff in there that hadn't been used in years. There was a lot of donated equipment that we weren't using and really didn't have any plans of using in the future.

So we spent almost an entire day cleaning, sorting, trashing, and moving stuff around. We also recently purchased a new Dell PowerEdge 2950 Server with a MASSIVE amount of storage space that will now be used as our primary file and data storage for the church and make it much easier to find data we are looking for on the network.

Some very exciting times for technology at Cross Lane!

Check out some of the pictures from the day at http://www.christhornberry.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6.

Some of you that work with me on a regular basis probably have been around when I moan and groan about power cords. I really HATE power cords. They are such an eye-sore and really make things difficult to route. So I've always talked about how I want to invent "Wireless Power".

Well earlier this week one of my colleagues sent me an e-mail with this link (link: http://mytreo.net/archives/2007/02/wild-charger-does-charge-wirelessly-really.html). It appears that someone has beat me to the punch on this one! Now not that I would actually be able to physically implement something like this but the idea was already there!

On a definitely different note than my last post we went to the Doctor this afternoon for a checkup from our little incident a week ago. And as you can read from the title of the post all of you that voted on the poll as a GIRL are WRONG!

We have clear and definitive proof that the little one is a boy. Denise is going to follow-up with a better and more in-depth post on the subject but I'm fulfilling my Husbandly Technical duties by posting a scan of the Ultrasound photos.

Enjoy,

Just a quick post to let you know how much fun I have had today. For the last 3 WEEKS I have been trying to get some GPS Tracking setup on our Cellular Cards we have out in the field down in Florida.

Dealing with all of these people I have been told "it will take just a little longer" ... "we're working on it" ... "it'll be done by Wednesday morning" ... "i'll call you back at noon" ... and "stick with me Mr. Thornberry".

Well, today I finally got fed up with the whole thing and was given a phone number for the "Corporate Inneroffice" who deals specifically and totally with Retention. I have spent almost 3 1/2 hours on the phone with an associate named Bradley who has been great to work with ... he hasn't had much good news but at least has been truthful with me. Would be good if he would switch positions and handle customers on the front-end.

Basically they're telling me they are unable to turn on locating on our cards because we are a "Corporate Account" and the Sprint Family Locator Service is only available for "Consumers". Sprint has a program called the "Precision Locator" which is designed and targeted for businesses who need to remotely monitor their workforce but our phones apparently aren't capable of running on this service.

The ONLY way we can get this type of tracking is to move our phones to a Consumer account and put discounts on the account to bring us down to the Corporate rate on a Consumer account.

I'm waiting on hold as he is trying to get me in touch with a member of the Sprint Family Locator Department so I can smack some #)(*&#%es around!

For those of you reading this blog you may think of me as some sort of a self-serving Techie-Boy that would rather talk about our new television set over the great occurence of actually being able to see some of the first movements of our unborn child. I want to make sure it is VERY clear to all of you that there is not a SINGLE THING on this earth that even comes close to matching in comparison to my family. THINGS are cool but they are nothing without a family. For more information on the recent occurences here with the baby and all of her (Yeah, you heard me right I'm pretty sure it's a girl) recent movements check out Denise's latest blog entry (right below this one).

Ok, now to the new occurences and purchases with respect to technology in our house. I guess I should back up a little bit and set the record straight about this before I go on. Since we moved in our house we have made due with a lot things people gave us so we didn't have to spend a lot of money we didn't have right after getting married and moving in to the house. Well, over the course of the last year and a half or so God has really been so good to us and put us in a financial position where we could afford to get some upgrades around the house. About a year or so ago we were able to go out and buy a new King Size bed which we has led to a more restful sleep (most nights).

That said, we have been fortunate to have a 36 inch ProScan (pretty much a high-level RCA) tube type TV in our house since we've moved in. My aunt and uncle who moved to Florida around the time we moved in to our house really didn't want to pack the beast so he let us have it (BIG THANKS!). Well since we've had it has begun to age further and recently has decided it is going to go into fits of a HIGH PITCHED SQUEALING noise after it warms up. Denise found the magic button and is able to silence the squeal with a firm smack on the side of the set. (Note: I'm glad she hasn't used the method on me yet ... hehe).

I'm really drawing this out here aren't I? OK, fast forward to Sunday night ... I was at my in-laws house and I told my father-in-law that if the Colts won Sunday night that it was destiny that I needed to buy a new TV and we were going to have a Superbowl Party. Well, for any of you that weren't in a cave for the last 48-72 hours know the Colts pulled off THE BIGGEST comeback in NFL history (either AFC or NFC) and defeated the New England Patriots (38-34) after being down 21-3 in the first half.

Well, last night my Dad and I tromped over to Best Buy in Avon and did some haggling. I worked with a guy Ron who was very good to answer all of my questions ... believe me ... there were lots. At the end of the day I left with a Sony Grand VEGA 55 inch LCD HDTV. It is only 720p but will downscale 1080i to 720p and looks EXQUISITE! We hooked up the cable and all of the different components last night and man, it is beautiful.

So, if you're in the neighborhood of Avon come Superbowl Sunday looks us up and come enjoy the BIG GAME on our new BIG TV! I don't know that Marti likes it all that much as there is a box about 50 times bigger than him in the middle of the living room.

For those of you that are a bit more visual, here are a couple photos:
